Efficient Biodiesel Analysis

The Frontier MIR is the industry standard regarding laboratory FT-IR performance. The system is idea for biodiesel analysis as it offers proven and robust sampling with built-in diagnostics and calibrations functions to deliver the most accurate and reliable data.

With the Biodiesel FAME Analyzer system, ASTM D7371-07 and EN 14078:2003 calibrations and prediction protocols are supplied so the instrument can be up and running in the shortest possible time. Automation and single-click calculation protocols enable reproducible results.

The Biodiesel FAME Analyzer comes equipped with:

Frontier MIR Spectrometer

Frontier FT-MIR spectrometers configured for the Biodiesel FAME Analyzer feature:

  • Standard, high-performance, room-temperature LiTaO3 (lithium tantalate) MIR detector with a SNR of 10,000:1
  • Optional temperature-stabilized DTGS (deuterated triglycine sulfate) detector, ideal for low-light, high throughput applications with an enhanced SNR of 15,000:1
  • Optical system with KBr beamsplitter to enable quality data collection over a range of 8,300 – 350 cm-1 at a best resolution of 0.4 cm-1
  • Standard KBr windows
  • Standard AVC/APV/AVI configuration
  • Option for either a PerkinElmer UATR or HATR sampling accessory

Setting the Standard

The Frontier is loaded with a range of advanced innovations designed to provide optimal performance for biodiesel analysis.

  • Dynascan interferometer – Fixed mirror-pair interferometer design does not require dynamic alignment to compensate for errors.
  • Atmospheric Vapor Compensation (AVC) – Features an advanced digital filtering algorithm designed to compensate for CO2 and H2O absorptions in real time removing the need for instrument purging.
  • Automatic Performance Verification (APV) – Optional feature comprising an integrated, fully automatic filter wheel containing traceable reference materials and software allowing for abscissa, ordinate, noise, ASTM, and USP tests to be performed.
  • Absolute Virtual Instrument (AVI) – Optional AVI standardization using gas phase methane spectra ensures instruments are accurately calibrated. Unique standardization allows data to be transferred precisely between instruments, side-by-side or in remote locations.
  • Sigma-Delta Conversion: The use of Sigma-Delta converters in the digitization of the FT-IR interferogram improves the dynamic range, reduces spectral artifacts, and increases ordinate linearity to provide accurate, reproducible results.
  • Variable J-stop – Limits beam divergence to provide optimal measurements at all resolutions, including intermediate settings.
  • Output focusing optics for second sampling station – Enables two sampling accessories to be installed simultaneously, removing the need to switch modules between measurements.

ATR Sampling Accessory

The UATR and HATR are excellent general accessories for the analysis of solids and liquids, producing high quality spectra through the use of a pressure arm by allowing good contact of the sample with the crystal. The Universal ATR (UATR) 9-bounce accessory is designed for superior analysis of liquid samples, featuring a diamond/ZnSe crystal. The Horizontal ATR (HATR) is designed for efficient, reproducible analysis of dilute liquid solutions, featuring a fixed 45 degree sampling trough plate with a ZnSe crystal.

Features of the UATR and HATR include:

  • Automatic recognition - as soon as the accessory is placed in the sample compartment, the module is recognized, and system suitability checks can be carried out.
  • Zero alignment, zero set-up - once locked into the instrument, the system is ready to be used without any alignment
  • Integration - the plug-in module design means the accessory becomes an integral part of the instrument once installed
  • Live spectral preview mode and force readout in Spectrum software ensure good contact with the crystal before scanning
